Farm Sanctuaries should not be profit-driven enterprises. In Canada you can incorporate as a non-profit (not-for-profit) which is when you create your bylaws, board of directors etc.
If you want to offer your donors a tax receipt, you will need to after incorporating as a non-profit, go through the process of becoming a registered charity in Canada.
We highly recommend you start your process of becoming a charity right after incorporating as a non-profit, as it can take up to a year to process, depending on how fast you complete and submit the paperwork. We also highly recommend getting help from a lawyer, if you have no prior legal experience. Please see the below resource from P.E.A.C.E. called “How To Become A Charity!”
Please note, with your GFAS certification, there is no time limit to complete it, but you will need your Canadian charity status confirmed as part of the certification.
